Toontrack Superior Drummer 3 Hands-On Review Toontrack Superior Drummer 3 is a virtual instrument and drum production plug-in, which offers 230GB of raw, unprocessed drum sounds, a comprehensive library of grooves, advanced sound-replacement and augmentation tools, and a built-in mixer to route and process custom kits, all in one program. This virtual drum studio allows producers, engineers, and drummers to create drum tracks with natural timbre and tone, or build otherworldly kits with layers of sound design, all of which can be played in stereo or surround sound for a complete immersive experience.
Superior Drummer 3's library offers a comprehensive source of individually sampled acoustic drum sounds recorded by industry legend George Massenburg at Galaxy Studios in Belgium. It contains seven kits, twenty-six snares, and sixteen kicks, played with an assortment of sticks, brushes, rods, and more.
All acoustic instruments are recorded in pristine 44.1 kHz/24-bit audio, with direct microphones as well as with an additional eleven separate room mics set up in a surround configuration, for playback on up to 11.1 systems. To expand the sound palette of your productions, the library also contains 350 vintage and classic drum machine sounds.
You can also drag & drop your own drums or third-party samples, and save your custom drum projects for quick access. The plug-in is equipped with a Song Track window, which allows you to effortlessly build full drum arrangements right inside the program. The advanced search function helps you find the 'right' groove from more than 1600 individually played MIDI files. You can then customize your drum parts using the grid editor. The Tracker provides seamless integration of offline audio-to-MIDI conversion. It detects hits with accuracy and speed, and is ideal for replacing and augmenting drums.
Featuring 35 low-CPU effects and a library of mix-ready presets created by industry legends—Bob Rock, Andy Sneap, George Massenburg, and Richard Devine—the mixer turns each channel strip into a virtual sound processor that lets you bus, route, send, saturate, and blend your kits. The ergonomic GUI is designed to remove the separation between users and the execution of their ideas. It can be scaled to fit any screen and lets you detach windows to create your own layouts.
I'm not a big fan of Sneap's stuff, but I thought it'd be interesting to check it out. Even though I don't like a lot of the drum sounds he goes for, I still found it pretty cool to poke around in. Gave me some different ideas on how to process things, he does a lot of layering on the snare drum and some on the kick, etc. Because he stacks a lot of stuff and uses the chamber mics and whatnot though, his presets in full take up to 1800mb or so. Worth getting I think (and it costs bugger all anyway). Yeah, you have to pay, but it's really not that much money. And then it's just small download from their site, so you can start playing around with it straight away.
That said, if you want to actually learn anything from his presets (rather than just loading them up and using them as they are), you're pretty much going to have to learn your way around S2.0. He makes good use of the nodes for the snare and kick, and also makes pretty good use of the mixer. Lots of parallel comp/EQ using the aux channels. First night I played around with it, I basically spent the whole night just sitting there with one preset, solo'ing tracks and hearing what he had each channel doing, listening to what each of the four (:? ) stacked snares was adding to the sound, going through all his bleed settings, comp/EQ/filter settings, etc. The S2.0 interface does have a lot of depth to it, but it's all quite clear and logically laid out IMO.
The other presets also sound pretty wicked, but I haven't yet put them into multi channel templates. It takes quite a while to do it, cause i take out all the plugins in superior drummer and insert plugins in Pro Tools and match the settings to the ones in the SD preset. It makes it so much cooler to be able to change all the processing and everything within the pro tools mixer One thing that made the kick drum sound so much bigger was to do the offline bounce in the SD GUI and then you got all of the bleeds and everything. I usually bounce all the tracks with bleed and also without bleed and then I got perfect triggers hehe I also then duplicate then ambient mic and pitch shift it down an octave, compress it, filter everything above like 800hz and mix it in a little. The kick, toms & snare sound huge then.
Intense low hz thump. Something i read that Joe Baressi does hehe But yeah i do agree, the kick doesn't sound to real straight out of SD. But to me it everything changes after the offline bounce. But thanks for the input Cheers cheers.

6 years ago Adam 'Nolly' Getgood of Periphery demonstrating a range of clean and overdriven from the '60 PE J Bass bridge coil and '58 Split-coil P Bass pickups, featuring music from Periphery's track 'The Gods Must Be Crazy'. '60 PE J Bass: 'Using the same vintage correct fibre board flat work and Alnico V magnets as the '60 HF J Bass set, both coils of the '60 PE J Bass set are hand-wound with 42AWG plain enamel wire. Accurate to late 1960 J Bass coils, the plain enamel wire produces a tighter coil with slightly more output and a more aggressive tone. The bottom-end is extremely defined with fast response to playing dynamics; mids are punchy and solid while the highs are clear with vowel-like reproduction.
Both coils blended together allow for full hum-cancelling as the neck coil is RWRP and hookup is vintage correct black and white cloth 'push back ' to complete the vibe.' '58 Split-coil P Bass: 'As the Precision bass evolved the early Tele bass single coil was replaced with a split coil, humbucking design in 1957. The '58 Split Coil P is based on the slightly later split coil design with flat profile, hand bevelled, Alnico V magnets arranged across two coils with opposing wind direction and magnetic polarity to cancel out hum. Scatter-wound by hand with 42AWG plain enamel wire, the tone is stronger in the bass with a more controlled high end and slightly scooped mid compared to the earlier single coil. Many thanks to Pete Graves for filming the footage! 3 years ago After I did a review on Toontrack's Metal Machinery SDX, I was looking for a song to demonstrate the samples with a cover. Due to my sloppy drumming skills, I couldn't play a common metal song, so I picked this one from Megadeth, a mid-tempo one, but I'm still struggling.;-) Anyway, the Metal Machinery SDX has some great samples included. Though I'm not a huge fan of presets, the ones from famous metal producer Andy Sneap work right of the box.
I chose the 'Allround' preset, which includes Sneap's samples for snare and kick, but I added Sneap's tom samples, too. Furthermore, I changed nothing on the preset, what you hear is what you get.
For the mixing I just did some really subtle stuff: Threw the Virtual Console Collection, the Virtual Bus Compressor (FG-MU) the Virtual Tape Machine on the master bus and some slight enhancement using Slate Digital's Custom EQ. Mastered, of course, with Steven Slate's FG-X. As always, high quality headphones or speakers are recommended. 7 years ago Hey folks, I'm back with an updated version of my Addictive Drums metal kit!
The main improvement was lowering the tuning of the snare and adding some reverb and delay to the snare as well as a bit to the rest of the kit. The kick has also had a bass as well as a high-end boost, with the toms being a little fatter. The first part of the video shows off the dry kit and then goes into a song using the raw kit with little processing done besides a general master to the mix. Download the kit preset from here: HOW TO INSTALL THE PRESET 1. Save it to your computer. Make sure the file extension is.ADpreset and not.txt or whatever else it shows up as. Copy it into your Addictive Drums User Presets folder, on Windows it should be located in Documents/Addictive Drums/User Presets.
On Mac, I'm not quite sure sorry. But have a look in your documents folders as well. If not it might somewhere in your Library folder.
